Thinking inside the box …
Do you remember on The Wizard of Oz, how Dorothy would click the heals of her ruby slippers together, and say, “There’s no place like home….There’s no place like home”.?
Well, this “project” was NO place like ANY home I’ve ever seen….early on, there wasn’t anything worthy of “heal clicking” to be found!
It all happened so fast!
The Builder/Contractor and his 5 sons moved fast!! Within a 3-day span, they removed 6 layers of roofing shingles, added a new roof, removed 2 windows, blocked a door and a window, added a new larger window, created rooms out of piles of lumber, laid a subfloor, steps, hung new entry doors, and gave us a cathedral ceiling about 7′ higher than the original ceiling. They created a larger kitchen, a full bath and linen closet out of a large closet, a full bath out of a storage room, added a utility room by putting a small furnace in the attic, and I. Could Not. Have Been. Happier!!
Now….it looked like the cottage that I had originally drawn out on a napkin to show my brother, our electrician. Instead of lumber piles, I could now see (in my head) completely finished rooms, right down to color, furniture, lighting, flooring, and accessories. I was on cloud nine!
Jon, my husband, couldn’t “see” a thing…. not until the drywall went up, and the walls were painted, could he actually “see” what I had been so excited about the whole time. And now it was his turn…. finally, the lake house he had been talking about for years, was right in front of him!
Jon on Demo Day, day one, the right side of the photo is now the Master Bath shower, white subway tile and glass doors…. unreal transformation!
After the “demo” portion was completed, our friends, our “life-savers”, returned to their homes. We were, and still are, beyond grateful. Such incredible people that we’ve known, and met, along the way!
We were, and are so blessed by their kind hearts…and strong backs!
Room by room, this cottage took shape and form, and then a personality of its own. Though it was still small, it was warm and friendly, I think it was glad to be “pretty” again…. a 2021 version of pretty, for a 1950’s sweet old cottage!
More photos to come…. side by side is the best way to see befores, and afters, and I’ve been posting them on Instagram, for you to follow .
I do appreciate you all for your kind comments, and for reading along….
Next, we really get this cottage up and running…..a million little decisions created one tiny home…and we couldn’t be happier.
Stay with me….Talk to you soon!
xx,
