Way back “in the day”, September was the back-to-school month, now children are getting out of school earlier in the year and returning in August.
Too bad. It was nice enjoying the long Labor Day weekend, right before classes began.
But you don’t miss what you don’t know, right? !
So, let’s talk September…
Labor Day weekend, I’ll be hosting my daughter and her family, AND a girlfriend of my grandson’s! I hope we don’t scare her away!
Lots to do in preparation:
First, strong coffee, at least 2-3 cups.
Next, a very long grocery store list, and a list for what to pack, since the weather could be anywhere and anything in September.
Thinking of a Hobo Stew over the firepit, if it’s cold out, if not, we’ll be grilling brats and chicken for sure, maybe roasting corn on the grill as well. Fresh vegetables for salads of all sorts and just for munching on.
I promised to make the French Toast bake for breakfast, it’s worthy and able to feed a crowd So, note to myself, don’t forget the cookbook!
As always, with every lake holiday, while I’m hosting family or friends, we’ve also been invited to be somewhere else, a different lake and a different party. This is expected, and constant.
But hey, at least we were invited!
So, do you do anything special on Labor Day weekend? A quick get-away? Traveling, hosting, or napping on the sofa?
It’s all good!
Later this month, we have two large projects that we want to complete before October. The first, is our kitchen flooring here at home, the tiles literally ROSE up off of the floor, I heard a very loud breaking and cracking sound in the kitchen, and I actually thought the large picture windows were breaking! Turns out, that the mortar under the tiles had dried and the tile was literally lifting off of our slab, due to temperature changes within the room. Have you EVER heard of that? NO??, I haven’t either!
Naturally, our homeowners’ insurance will not cover it.
I chose new flooring, got estimates and brought all of the sample’s home, didn’t love any of them, so we decided to repair the worst of it, and continue looking for new flooring. I want the flooring to be consistent throughout the house, we have a very open floor plan, and that visually increases your square footage and is pleasing to the eye. That is our first large project, so it won’t be as bad or as messy as we originally thought.
Second, our porch ceiling at our little cottage. For five years I’ve looked up at our open beams in the porch ceiling, and read the words, “this side down” on the plywood under our new roof shingles! It’s bilingual, printed in both English and Spanish! Though I find that interesting and unique, I’m tired of it! When Jon bought a house-full of old flooring at an auction, I knew I had found my new view, of 150-year-old pine flooring for my ceiling. After 150 years, no more foot traffic!! I imagine the flooring is so relieved!
So, why before October?
Well, October has plans of its own, my friends!
We have one last big party at the cottage in October. It’s our Hobo Stew Party, a handful of friends, a cast-iron pot full of beef and vegetables, a million stars overhead, and a cold brew in our hands…. can you imagine the sheer bliss?
Anyway, we’ll talk October in October!
What are you up to this month?
What’s special for you? You know, you can make your own special, if you have to!
Drop a comment, share this with a friend, tell people how inspiring and awesome this letter is, how it has changed your life for the better…. how millions have found “relief”…, ha! just kidding. really though, drop a comment below, so I know you’re actually here!
Enough already, just wanted to drop you a quick line, before September actually gets away from us.
Have a great one, friends!,
