Do you make your father his favorite dessert or meal on Father’s Day?
Does he give you the same request every. single. year?!
Well, I thought my Dad did!
The entire time I sat at our family table, growing up, my father had German Chocolate Cake for every birthday and for every Father’s Day celebration, with or without extra family or guests attending, but always with vanilla ice cream.
Always.
Mom made the cake. Dad said it was great.
Decades later, as my mother had trouble with her vision, I volunteered to be the cake baker for the “events” in the family; birthdays, holidays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, company coming over, etc. All of it.
I continued each year to duplicate baking Dad his German Chocolate Cake, his favorite, and always with vanilla ice cream.
I made the cake. Dad said it was great.
Five years after Dad retired, he was seriously hurt in a freak accident in his own home. Moving a sofa back into the “little marks” left on freshly cleaned carpeting, his foot became caught under the sofa, throwing him straight back onto the wall, which snapped his neck. It didn’t kill him, though he was forever physically changed after the fall.
He lived in a wheelchair for the last 15 years of his life, his attitude was as sweet as ever, a man of strong faith, he was grateful to be with us still.
My parents lived together as long as they could, and as long as it was in their best interest, medically. for both of them.
A few years later, when Dad was in a Nursing facility, I asked him if he wanted his favorite cake for Father’s Day, I’d be happy to bring it and the rest of the family would join us, bringing the vanilla ice cream.
“What are you bringing”? he asked, with his eyes all aglow, “your favorite, German Chocolate Cake,” I replied.
“That’s NOT my favorite, that’s your mother’s fancy cake!”
then, “No one ever asked me what my favorite cake is….”
“WHAT IN THE WORLD is your favorite cake, Dad????” I said with drop-over-dead disbelief!
“Apple Spice cake.”
Figures…I don’t even know how to make an Apple Spice Cake!
BUT I’ll figure it out!!! With vanilla ice cream, of course!
Long story short…
I made THE cake. Dad said it was GREAT!!!
Whenever you need a “fancy cake”, there is none better than a German Chocolate Cake!
Let’s be real, it’s all about that icing, it’s melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and the chocolate itself, is mild and not overly sweet, just right.
You’ll find the recipe for the cake and the icing inside the wrapper of the Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate, 1 -4 oz. bar needed.
I’ve tried German Chocolate cake mixes, and the flavor isn’t quite the same, and the canned icing is almost awful, you really have to make it by scratch, to fully enjoy this “fancy” cake.
You’ll love this, I hope you try it, it’s worth the effort…
and always, don’t forget the vanilla ice cream!
Enjoy!
xx,
