I love adding fresh greens to my vintage wares. This antique medicine cabinet has never looked so good! Old, mismatched dishes, seed pots, garden markers used as name tags for my Easter table, linens, and garden tools combine for a striking photo op!
I live in Indiana, in the Northeastern corner of the state. If we plant before Mother’s Day, we risk losing all of our plants, seedlings and starts to frost. Temperatures dip down below freezing quite often in the early months of Spring. The locals know this. We wait patiently for mid-May every year.
Anxious to get started with my planting, I’m planning what I want to plant and more importantly, WHAT I want to plant them in! The vessels, or containers can be as varied as your imagination. There are no limits to what you can use, as long as it has:
adequate drainage for the water used,
room for the roots to grow without crowding,
Look at the sunlight/shade requirements for each plant before planting.
Now for the fun part!
I prefer vintage vessels to plant in and use them if I can find them! These wood, tin, clay or painted pieces add so much character to an already beautiful plant. Old cement urns, classically shaped, are another favorite of mine. For all of this time, I’ve thought I was quite an “original”, but these items are now referred to as “yard art”!
Whatever your vessel of choice, I’d like to encourage you to try something new. A color scheme you haven’t tried or considered before, a cluster of pots in different sizes and heights instead of one large pot, add a small decorative item or a small light in your container along with the flowers. Keep adding and subtracting until you’re happy with the final result!
No matter your choice, flowers add so much life to your decor, inside and outside.
Enjoy, my friends!
XO,
