for my Dining Room Hutch!
I’m giving this antique hutch a Spring Refresh!
You can see our reflections through the old glass doors of my not-so-new hutch!
We purchased this sweet little hutch at an Estate Auction, an old farmhouse on two acres, with original out-buildings were being auctioned off. The farmhouse was to die for!!
When I said, “this house is PERFECT for us,” my husband said, “keep looking.”
I believe he meant to forget the house, get something we can put in the car and take home. Turns out, it did not fit easily into our SUV, but I had pre-measured the interior, knowing within an inch or two how much room I had to fill! We brought our little hutch home on a Sunday morning, starting our week off sweetly.
She had a few loose joints/corners and old paint still stuck in all of her seams…but isn’t that just part of the aging process? Being well loved for a century, can leave its mark on a girl!
Her interior had been filled with old white ironstone, with a faded creamy paint as the backdrop. I loved it, and thought she was perfect “as is”. However, I haven’t met anyone yet in Insta World that raves over such primitive, and rough conditions. Don’t we all want the Cinderella story? What’s an ugly duckling without the beautiful Swan that follows? Still a sad, wet, ugly bird!
Well, I looked around my home for the colors most used in every room, searching for continuity. My large pieces of furniture are in the ivory/light beige neutral tones, and my accent colors are sage green, darker brown, white and a mustard gold, which is my favorite. Now, the hutch had remnants of white and a robin’s egg blue in her seams, traces of her past life remaining, and at first, I chose the off-white to repaint her, knowing it had been done and it felt “safe”.
Then, I did what I always do…
I changed my mind.
It delayed my schedule, it backed up everything else I was supposed to be doing, but it thrilled me to do “me”, instead of “them”. It actually set Easter back a couple of days, and I didn’t think that was possible!
I chose a soft sage green for the exterior of the hutch, with a freshly painted creamy white for the interior, as a new, clean backdrop for MY ironstone and Blue Willow dishes.
I. AM. EXCITED.
This basket is filled with all that is soft, natural and comforting to me, these are the colors that will be found in my old hutch.
Can you see it?
I won’t keep you hanging here, I’ll let you enjoy your evening, but I wanted to just point out that “creating home” should excite you as much as comfort you…both are needed for the place we all refer to as “Home”.
Be yourself, add what you love into your house, and in return, your house will give you a “Home”.
Rest well tonight,
xx,
